How to Select a Submersible Level Transmitter?
#news ·2026-10-29 16:03:20
In the field of process automation, submersible level transmitters are widely applied in petrochemical, municipal water supply, hydrological monitoring and other scenarios. Automation engineers and O&M personnel often encounter several problems in practical use. It is hard to accurately match working conditions amid a huge variety of models and specifications. Signal drift and insufficient measurement accuracy after commissioning will result in process control deviations. Instruments have insufficient protection and high failure rates under harsh working conditions. Once a fault occurs, slow response and inadequate after-sales support from suppliers directly disrupt continuous and stable production. These problems not only push up project and maintenance costs, but also bring non-negligible safety risks.
Featuring simple installation and wide adaptability to working conditions, submersible level transmitters are the preferred option for numerous liquid level monitoring applications. However, faced with a large number of brands and models, how can we select the product suitable for site working conditions? From an application perspective, this article systematically sorts out the core selection points of submersible level transmitters.
Analysis of Core Factors for Submersible Level Transmitter Selection
Instrument selection is more than a simple parameter check. It is a comprehensive evaluation process combining application working conditions, technical specifications and long-term O&M requirements. The core considerations are as follows:
1.Measuring Range and Medium Properties
This is the primary basis for selection. It is necessary to define the maximum liquid level height (range) of the measured medium, and sort out medium characteristics, including corrosion resistance, presence of suspended solids, medium temperature range, etc. For corrosive working conditions, corrosion-resistant materials such as 316L stainless steel are preferred for the sensor diaphragm and probe. Where the medium contains suspended solids or is prone to scaling, a filter screen can be equipped to reduce erosion and fouling on the pressure-sensing diaphragm.2.Measurement Accuracy and Long-term Stability
Accuracy directly determines the reliability of measured data. Standard submersible level transmitters usually have an accuracy class of 0.5. For applications with stricter control requirements, some models with a measuring range ≥10 m are available in high-precision class 0.25. Apart from factory accuracy, long-term stability is particularly critical. It governs whether readings remain consistent after prolonged continuous operation and reduces frequent calibration work.3.Output Signal and Power Supply Matching
The signal type and power supply shall be compatible with the interfaces of on-site control systems such as DCS and PLC. Common signals include analog 4~20mA, 0~5V, 0~10V, as well as RS485 digital signals based on the Modbus protocol. Power supply specifications vary by output type. A typical two-wire 4~20mA transmitter generally operates on 10~32VDC. The permissible loop load resistance should also be checked during selection to ensure normal signal transmission.4.Installation Environment and Protection Rating
As the sensor is submerged in liquid for long-term operation, it must feature an IP68 protection rating for full dust resistance and continuous immersion protection. If the transmitter junction box is installed outdoors, in humid pump rooms or similar locations, the housing protection rating is recommended to be no lower than IP67. Meanwhile, evaluate interference factors such as ambient temperature, equipment vibration and nearby heat sources, and adopt avoidance or isolation measures in the installation plan.5.Structure Type and Supporting Cable
The mainstream types are direct cable type and 2088 housing type. The direct cable type features a simple structure and lower cost, suitable for limited installation space and direct connection to site junction boxes. The 2088 housing type comes with a protective enclosure and built-in terminal blocks, enabling easier field wiring, inspection and maintenance with better protection performance. The cable length shall exceed the actual measuring depth with proper allowance reserved. The cable sheath can be PVC or wear-resistant PU according to on-site abrasion risks.
